To all of our FemHype crew members who happen to be celebrating right now, we wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! In the spirit of good turkey and giving thanks (not colonization), we asked our writing team what characters they were most thankful for. There’s a difference—a pretty big difference, as it turns out—between a beloved favorite character and a character who, upon meeting them, makes you pause. We’re deeply interested in exploring that very tangible moment, the one that leaves an impression days and even months after playing a game. It’s an experience defined by one character, and we’re so thankful that they exist.

As always, our super incredible staff were more than up to the task. Confronting the Limits of Comfort in ‘12hrs’


12 Hours

[Trigger warning: homelessness, sexual assault, suicide, police brutality, and misogyny.]

I’ve never been homeless before.

I’ve always been poor.

When it comes to the many thin and transparent layers of poverty, every new day feels like a potential step in the right or wrong direction. I was raised by a single mother with a disability, gradually cast out over the years from a white middle-class family too deep in their nasty bias to financially and emotionally support a deaf woman and her biracial daughter. I’ve been on the cusp of prestige—occasionally visiting my grandparents’ gated beach-side community in my younger days and marveling at the borderline fantasy land at my disposal.

More familiar became the sting of poverty—living in trailers throughout junior high and moving to a new apartment every few years afterwards with the omnipresent hope that my mother’s Section 8 benefits wouldn’t dry up anytime soon…

As we rapidly approach our one-year anniversary on December 1st, I think it’s important to discuss with all of you what our plans for the future are and how they might come to fruition. Way back when, I created this space in the hope that it would act as a safe, inclusive environment for women and nonbinary folk to discuss video games with others who shared that vision. It has since grown exponentially—far beyond anything I initially conceived—and for that, I want to thank every single person to ever like, comment, or share an article. You’ve helped us reach so many wonderful people, and I’m truly grateful to be working with all of you.
