Dragon Age: Origins – June 19th -20th, 2011: Wine and Roses

June 19th, 2011: I talked to Leliana some more, and she said that she loved me.

Enemies are far more docile on Casual.

Wynne knew about Leliana and I. She went on and on about sparing us from any pain we might suffer, because a Grey Warden could not afford to be selfish. I was… displeased.

Is the game seriously telling me to step up?! I haven’t even made a serious move yet.

Leliana said that we would go off together and find our fortune.

She is the only female romancable BioWare character to make me pursue her.

BioWare’s attempts to put romance in their games have been criticized by some, but this is really fascinating.

A sheltered elven mage and an assassin-turned-nun from Orlais. What a pair.

Just imagine what would happen with Wynne if I were trying to romance Morrigan.

Which I would never do because I didn’t like her, and you can’t romance her as a female Warden anyway.

June 20th, 2011: We pushed through the Deep Roads to Caridin’s Cross, to Orton Thaig and to the Dead Trenches. Eventually, we heard a woman talking: “First day they come and catch everyone.

Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat.

Third day, the men are all gnawed on again.

Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate.

Fifth day, they return and it’s another girl’s turn.

Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams.

Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew.

Eighth day, we hated as she is violated.

Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin.

Now she does feast, as she’s become the beast.

Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dreams.”

It was a dwarven woman named Hespith. She claimed to be the captain and former lover of Oghren’s wife, the Paragon Branka.

If I knew that she had those interests, I could’ve made some adjustments,” said Oghren.

Laryn, another member of Branka’s party, became the broodmother for the Darkspawn of the Trenches. She was nauseating to look upon.

This boss seems to agree with me on her looks because she vomits on nearby pursuers in one of her attacks.

After we slayed the broodmother, Hespith said that the worst part was not what happened to Laryn, but that it was allowed.

Branka… my love…” lamented Hespith. “I am dying of something worse than death, dream-friend.

Betrayal.”

The Anvil of the Void rested beyond the Trenches. That bitch Branka trapped us inside to endure a gauntlet of traps and Darkspawn to get the Anvil for her.

Unlocked Master Warden.

Beyond traps, golems, and Darkspawn, the Anvil of the Void awaited us. Its forger, Caridin, long since a golem himself, told his tale of a hard-earned lesson. The Anvil forged soldiers at the cost of the lives of dwarves. At first, Caridin only accepted volunteers, but King Voltan wanted more. When Caridin refused, Voltan had his apprentices kill Caridin and seal his soul away inside of a golem.

Caridin pleaded with Etheria to destroy the Anvil. That rubbernecker Branka conveniently followed our trail and demanded that we preserve it.

The Anvil enslaves living souls!” said Etheria. “It must be destroyed!”

Thank you, stranger,” said Caridin. “Your compassion shames me.”

Oghren pleaded for us to just let Branka have the Anvil. He claimed that it would restore her reasoning.

I didn’t trust Branka but I don’t want to make Oghren unhappy. However, was that just protecting him from the inevitable?

Just give her the blasted thing,” blurted Oghren. “She’s confused… Maybe once she calms down, we can talk to her?”

That’s not a risk I’m willing to take,” replied Etheria.

Branka summoned golems and we did what we had to do. She even attacked her husband, that bitch!

Caridin fashioned a new crown for the new king. Then, he plummeted into the lava…

Unlocked Liberator.

So we gave the crown to Bhelen and blah blah blah got my troopes, won’t ever have to go to Orzammar ever again.

Unlocked Bhelen’s Ally.

What the nug? Some Harrowmont Fanaticsattacked us after we left Bhelen’s area. Give it up.

Having someone around like Oghren who doesn’t comprehend the idea of a sky is truly alien.

Well, now all that’s left is the Landsmeet. But before that…

Leliana took Etheria to bed. To be honest, the scene was… kinda hot, but kinda cheesy, too. What happened to Leliana’s hand? You monsters!

What happened was that the sex scenes in DA:O stretch the limits of the game’s animation, making for some awkward contortions. It’s been said that Mass Effect proved that less is more, and I personally prefer the sex scene in ME1 to that of DA:O.

One glitch generated a minor meme. A Warden that initiates a sex scene may still be wearing all of their armor for the duration of the sequence.

The morning after, Leliana said that Etheria made her feel loved and accepted, which pleased me.

Unlocked Wine, Woman, and Song. 17/50 Achievements

Each love interest has a different Achievement for romancing them.

Why Leliana? Well, she has the soul of a poet, a sweet personality, a great accent, and some of the best lines in the game. She’s very artistic, too.

Why not Alistair? He was so close to being my choice in this game. I’ve been impressed with his sense of humor ever since we’ve met, but his family history is messy. If he has to ascend to the throne, then what of his relationship with Etheria? Would any kingdom accept a human king and an elven queen? I decided not to put us through that.

Why not Zevran? He’s ok, but I prefer Leliana and Alistair. Zevran’s interactions with another elven character are interesting.

Why not Morrigan? I don’t like her. She disapproves of everything. She’s disapproving of you right now. -1 approval.

But seriously, she and Leliana are like night and day.
