Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Publisher (NA): Atlus USA
Platform: PlayStation Portable
Release (JP): April 14, 2011
Release (NA): September 20, 2011
Release (EU): November 4, 2011
In 1999, Atlus released the original Persona 2 for the PlayStation. Subtitled Tsumi (Japanese for Sin), It was the first game in the duology, but did not receive an English translation. Its sequel, Batsu (Punishment) did, however. The game was released in Japan and North America in 2000, revitalizing Atlus’ USA division.
Eleven years later, Atlus remade Sin and Punishment for the PSP, and this time, Sin got an official translation.
Sumaru City, Japan. A mysterious man called the Joker is spreading rumors throughout the city – rumors that come true, no matter how absurd or dangerous they may be. As he spreads rumors, others are able to spread rumors of their own that affect reality as well. Tatsuya Suou, a high school student at Seven Sisters High School, awakens to his Persona along with his friends after they try to summon Joker to see if the rumor that he grants wishes is true. When they summon Joker, he marks them for death… and blames them for a sin they supposedly committed against him. They remember committing no such crime, so they delve into the mystery surrounding Joker and his hold on Sumaru.
Nothing would ever be the same again.
Tatsuya Suou: This is your point of view character in IS. He is a cool loner with painfully strong willpower. He has an older brother named Katsuya. Default Persona: Apollo (The Sun)
Secondary Arcanas: The Hanged Man, The World
Weapon of Choice: Swords
Maya Amano: A cheerful journalist for Kismet Publishing and a writer for teen magazine Coolest. Maya arrives at Seven Sisters with her colleague Yukino to investigate the rumor that Joker grants wishes. Voiced by Wendee Lee.
Default Persona: Artemis (The Moon)
Secondary Arcanas: The Hermit, The Magician, Termperance
Weapon of Choice: Twin Pistols
Lisa “Ginko” Silverman: A quirky young lady and a Caucasian born and raised in Japan. She likes to lace her native Japanese with Chinese words. She harbors a deep love for Tatsuya.
Default Persona: Eros (The Lovers)
Secondary Arcanas: The Hermit, The Star, Temperance
Weapon of Choice: Her fists
Eikichi “Michel” Mishina: A student at Kasugayama High, the rival school to Seven Sisters. He looks like a “visual kei” rock star. Voiced by Troy Baker.
Default Persona: Rhadamanthus (Death)
Secondary Arcanas: The Hanged Man, Strength, The World
Weapon of Choice: A machine gun hidden in a guitar case
Yukino Mayuzumi: A character from the first Persona, where she retained her nickname of Yuki and her Japanese looks despite most of the other characters getting butchered in translation. She used to be a delinquent.
Default Persona: Vesta (The Empress)
Secondary Arcanas: The Hermit, The Star, Strength, Temperance, The Wheel of Fortune
Weapon of Choice: Razor blades
Joker: An enigmatic being that is summoned by calling your own cellphone number. Not much is known about him at this time.
Philemon: A man who bestows Personas onto others. He lives in the collective unconscious. He can not directly involve himself with the events that transpire beyond his realm.
A key difference between P1 and P2 and later Persona games is that characters besides the protagonist can equip multiple Personas for battle. That is why the characters have secondary arcanas. Characters who can equip Personas that they are not compatible with suffer penalties. I honestly kind of missed this feature in Persona 3 Portable.
September 27, 2011: Cute loading screen.
The intro is ridiculously gorgeous.
If you perform data install, try fiddling with the analog nub!
Everyone likes Mr. Hanya, but they don’t know why.
I recognize Ms. Saeko from P1. No one else wears a jacket that stylishly!
Lisa’s expressions are funny.
September 30, 2011: Let’s Visit Hameya Alley
Kuzunoha Detective Agency?!
As in Raidou Kuzunoha, the supernatural detective and devil summoner.
Lisa’s dad is Steven Seagal.
For some reason.
Maya has dialog?! That’s… wrong, somehow.
Maya was the silent protagonist of Punishment, so I was used to her not talking outside of dialog options.
This game definitely has that classic Persona fun. Contacting demons, ranking up Personas, getting Tarot Cards…
Eikichi’s Persona mutated! Cool.
There’s a creepy sound on the fourth floor of Seven Sisters High…
Yukki is hot. 😛
What does Joker mean by calling Tatsuya a “thief”?
Tried to get a new Persona, but all that was available was Poltergeist. Bleh.
Let’s Check Out Rumors
Who is Anna Yoshizaka, and why does she look like Lady from Devil May Cry?
Sigh. I’ll miss Lady.
All this “Boss”and “Leader” stuff reminds me of Cromartie High School.
Let’s Find a Mask to Get into Club Zodiac
Man, this contact stuff makes me realize that my capacity for pleasing spiteful characters has really diminished over the years.
Contacting allows you to try to schmooze up to a demon to get items, yen, or Tarot Cards from them. Each character has a few different options to negotiate, which can affect demons’ emotions in a variety of ways. Characters can also team up for more options.
Negotiating is fun at first, but is honestly really hard. I never fully mastered it.
Boss characters can not be negotiated with.
