Doom II Part One: Sin…

Let the obsession begin. Again.”

Doom II | Developer: | Publisher: Bethesda | Platform: Xbox 360 | Originally Released (PC): October 10, 1994| Originally Released (Xbox 360): May 26, 2010 | Originally Played From: November 21, 2016 – August 27, 2019

The Premise: Immediately after the events of Doom, the Marine (AKA Doomguy) discovers that a portal to Hell has been opened on Earth. Hell’s demons came through and killed billions of people. The survivors seek to escape Earth, so it’s up to the Marine to clear the way to Earth’s sole remaining terrestrial spaceport.

Basically: It’s time for him to once again do what he does best. And it’s not very nice.

Entryway

Unlocked An Important Looking Door and Just Getting Started. 2/12

I think the graphics look a bit nicer than in Doom.

The Gantlet?”

“The Focus” is hard. There doesn’t seem to be enough ammo to effectively deal with everything. I usually try tor a 100 percent kill rate, but I just tried to rush through that level.

This music is kinda weird. Very synth-heavy.

I like the sound of the Super Shotgun reloading.

I miss the overworld map between levels. There’s less of a sense of place without it.

The Crusher

What does this button do? Oh, it crushes the raised area with all of those Barons of Hell on it.

This stage introduces those spoopy skeleton guys.

The next level, “Dead Simple”, is short and small but intense. It has those big, fat demons with dual cannons.

Mancubus. It would later reappear in Doom 64, Doom 3, Doom (2016), and Doom Eternal.

Tricks and Traps

Unlocked A Really Big Gun. A big, BIG gun! 3/12, 25%

What an annoying level. It features a thing that looks like a Cacodemon. It spits out Lost Souls. AHHHH

Pain Elemental

You have to kill the thing before it spawns more things to kill.

I don’t like Archviles. They’re tall, naked, and creepy. They make creepily pleased noises, and they try to burn you with very damaging fires.

Archviles, the worst new enemy in the game

There’s a Doom mod, HDoom, that tries to be pornographic. It tries to make the demons look like anime chicks. A chainsaw dildo and a pillow are among the weapons. You can have sex with demons who have hearts around their heads. Lost Souls now look like disembodied torsos with a mane of flaming red hair.

“Circle of Death” is a tough and well-named level. Once beaten, you get a rare text scroll explaining that the alien base has been found in Doomguy’s home city.

“The Factory” has some nasty surprises.

Downtown” is crazy with Revenants atop a higher ledge and Arachnotrons that wander around, sometimes across teleportation pads.

It took forever. Well, almost 30 minutes. I got lost

Beat “The Inmost Dens” with 100% items and… 104% kills?

Unlocked Burning Out of Control. 4/12, 33%

Industrial Zone”: This seems like a fun level. Wide, open spaces.

I need a Red Key, but it’s really hard to get. It seems like I have to jump, or more accurately, slide across some boxes to get the thing. AND SO I TRIED OVER AND OVER UNTIL I DISCOVERED, BY ACCIDENT, THAT WALKING OVER A TELEPORTER WARPS YOU TO THE KEY

This level aches. “Perfect Hatred” in Doom was scary, but I didn’t hate it. “Perfect Hatred” sums up my feelings towards the “Industrial Zone”… perfectly.

This level is long and difficult. I got lost. Several times.

Par: 3:30? Oh, come on. It took me almost 40 minutes. I’m bad at Doom

Appropriately, the exit warp for this level is a hellish little piece of lava.

Suburbs

This level is downright horrifying. There are Revenants, Mancubi, (or whatever those fat things with multiple projectiles are), and Archviles. You’ll NEED the BFG9000, but it’s in a gross, gory room I’ll call the Flesh Cube.

Now I’m confused because I found a Red Key, but not the red door, and there are dozens of enemies that warp in.

We move on from the scary “Suburbs” to the tricky “Tenements”.

Sometimes, linear games can be refreshing because there aren’t a zillion things to do.
