Doom (1993)

Platform: Xbox 360|Developer: id Software|Publisher: Bethesda|Released (Original PC Version): December 10, 1993|Released (XB360 Version): September 27, 2006|Originally Played From: October 13, 2016 – October 26, 2016

A portal to Hell opens up after the Union Aerospace Corporation experiments with teleportation between Mars’ two moons, Phobos and Deimos. You are an unnamed Marine who has to fight his way out of Phobos’ moon base, braving the horrors that now call it home.

The PC game originally consisted of three Episodes made up of eight missions each. The first Episode: Knee-Deep in the Dead.

Unlocked Neophyte and Clean Slate. 2/12

This is more like the original PC version than the Custom PlayStation Edition. The music is different and there is a lack of load times.

The PS1 version was my gateway to Doom. Maybe someday, I’ll do a playthrough of that version as well; it has some interesting differences, including some new bonus levels.

The original music is a bit less moody than in the PS1 version. The levels seem different, too.

This is so much better and smoother than Wolfenstein 3-D.

The shotgun has surprisingly long range.

This version lets you aim with the right stick.

I almost got through Central Processing, but died at the very end.

You can save whenever and wherever you want.

Unlocked Scout. 3/12, 25%

I’ve always kind of liked how they bothered to give Doomguy different portraits depending on how hurt he is.

Episode One… has a downer ending? WHAT?!

You warp to the Deimos Base, but die almost immediately, yet Episode Two (The Shores of Hell) lets you continue on. Well, whatever. It’s kind of a cool ending.

Unlocked Episode One. 4/12, 33%

Deimos Anomaly

You can’t carry over your weapons between Episodes? But I barelygot to use the Chaingun and Rocket Launcher!

I can’t believe how quick some of the par times for the levels are. What does a Doom speedrun look like?

I love the name of this Episode.

The Refinery was tough.

In Episodes Two, the levels start to look more gory and arcane.

The Deimos Lab level has eerie music.

Fire and Forget

I got stuck really badly in the Lab. A certain switch was hidden excessively well.

There are some freaky-looking wall textures. The stereotypical demon heads may be both creepy and cheesy.

Why is there a Baron of Hell in a cage? Was he a bad demon?

Two Barons of Hell in a different level

It’s scary when Lost Souls rush at you.

A Lost Soul

Unlocked Hoarder. 5/12

Sometimes, you find other Marines’ corpses.

Some of the demons have red blood.

Mazes can be a drag.

At the end of Episode Two, you discover that Deimos floats over Hell. The next Episode was supposedly the last in Episode Two’s outro text.

Unlocked Episode Two. 6/12, 50%

The Cyberdemon Lord is a damage sponge.

The Cyberdemon

Doom was originally going to be based on Alien. Woah.

I’m glad that I’m not the only one with a disdain for Episode Two’s Halls of the Damned level.

The game has seen a lot of ports. The one for the 3DO was churned out by a lone woman in 10 weeks.

It was also originally going to have more plot depicted by live-action FMV cutscenes. It sounds like the most ‘90s thing ever.

Episode Three: Inferno

Slough of Despair lives up to its name.

This level is prickly because it gives you little to work with and tight corridors.
